What's Hot?

July 2nd, 2009

Call to Duty

This is my oldest son, Kyle.  This picture was taken last September when he and I were in Alaska fly fishing for coho.  He left yesterday for service in the Army.  He'll be part of a four man crew in an Abrams Tank.  We couldn't be any prouder of our son.  Seeing him go was that hardest thing I've ever had to do.  This past week has been spent with family and friends as we sent Kyle off to do something he's always wanted to do, serve our Country in the armed forces.  We already can't wait for his return!

Going Retro

For the past 35 plus years I've been a fly fisherman.  Mostly for steelhead, but pretty much anything that swims gets some attention from me with my fly rods.  I've always wanted a good bamboo fly rod.  Its finally happened.  Dave Dozer of Corvallis, Oregon www.bamboopursuits.com built this beautiful 8 1/2 foot, seven weight rod for me.  Its built on a faster taper - designed by legendary eastcoast cane rod builder "Pinky" Gillum and does this rod cast SWEEEET!  If you run into me on my days off (where I'll be fishing of course!) I'll be sportin' this new rod! If I'm working though, I'll be carting around my full arsenal of spey rods for clients use.  Its hard to argue with the success a spey rod can bring to a guide and his clients when swinging and skating flies for summer steelhead, but for getting back to the basics and overall esthetic enjoyment, nothing beats a fine cane rod!

North Umpqua

The counts over the dam at Winchester are way behnd schedule so I'm not sure how many fish have crossed.  I'll update it as soon as I know.  There are currently summer steelhead being caught below the fly water with some regularity and I've heard of several already being caught in the fly water.  My season on the North Umpqua fly water will begin in two weeks and I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Upper Willamette

The upper Willamette should be fishing great right now, but its still not.  Its the most crowded I've ever seen it and there are darn few fish being caught right now. There are over 10,000 summer steelhead and 20,000 spring chinook over the falls at Oregon City.  Yet the fishing on the "town run" and further upriver remains spotty and slow.  The Corps of Engineers have stabilized the flows so fishing should begin to improve.  Beginning early next week the Corps of Engineers are reportedly going to increase flows out of Dexter Dam to begin dropping water levels at Lookout Point where scheduled repairs have to be made on the dam.  This will increase flows through the town run which may or may not improve fishing.  I'll let you know.

Lower Umpqua

The spring chinook season on the lower Umpqua is over for 2009.  All in all it was a pretty good run this year with good numbers of jacks so next year should be even better.  The summer smallmouth bass season is underway and the past several days my clients have enjoyed fabulous fishing with 100 fish days routine. Small rubber-legged bass flies are what we're using now.  Its all site fishing too so that makes for some really fun action.

McKenzie

The upper McKenzie trout fishing has been fantastic for the past several weeks.  Great evening hatches of little yellow sallies, small brown caddis and mayflies provide great dry fly fishing.  Planter "pellet heads" are abundant in the McKenzie above and below Leaburg Dam as well and fishing for them has been very good this past week.

Pacific Ocean

Large schools of black sea bass are on the surface now, making them a great fly rod fish for those with a boat.  Coho are showing in good numbers withing a few miles of the beach and Tuna (albacore) could possibly start up as early as next week.

Well there you have it.  I'll keep you all posted over the coming days and weeks.  I expect that as the weather and water to continue making the transition to summer flows over the coming weeks and as more summer steelhead enter my rivers, the fishing will only continue to improve.

Also, for all of my guests coming to fish with me that need great accomodations, the nice folks at the Village Green Resort Hotel have agreed to continue the great deal we had with them from last year.  For $109.00 my guests get to spend a night in the Village Green's deluxe suites.  The package includes double occupancy, dinner for two from their full dinner menu, breakfast for two and a complimentary bottle of house wine!  All for just $109.00/night!!!  Its a great getaway for your significant other.  They can relax in a deluxe room, complete with a fireplace while your out fishing all day with me.  I'll pick you up in the morning and drop you back off at the hotel at the end of the day.  This package is based on room availability and is limited to Sunday through Thursday night.  For folks wanting a weekend rate, please contact the nice folks at the Village Green for those rates. Expert guide, Dean Finnerty, currently uses many different tried and proven fly rod techniques to get his clients into fish consistently. Dean and our guides will teach you what tactics, fly patterns and techniques that will work the best on any given day for the species you're after.

Dean has been a fly fishing instructor for more than 20 years and has taught fly-casting and presentation to both professional and beginning anglers.

We specialize in catch and release on most of our Steelhead, Trout and Smallmouth Bass trips. We recognize that many people enjoy catching fish for the table, but also understand that if our fishing resources are to last into the future, then now is the time to embrace conservation efforts for all the species we fish for. We recommend that our clients bring video camera's or 35 mm type cameras on their adventures to capture some of the scenes of the day. It is not uncommon for us to see Bald Eagles, Osprey, Seal/Sea Lion, Grey Whales, ducks, geese, deer, elk, bear and numerous other species of wildlife while on most of the rivers and bays that we fish. Dean can also make arrangements to have your trophy mounted by some of the top taxidermists around or have your fish "air shipped" anywhere in the world.

Our Goal at 5 Rivers Guide Service and North Umpqua Fly Fishing Adventures is to give you the best guided fishing trip in the state of Oregon, one that you will cherish the memories of, for years to come.
