What's Hot?

August 29th, 2010

I've been debating this for awhile. I want my website to be current with its information.  I want it to be educational and informative.  And because I'm in business to earn a living for my family and do something that I'm very passionate about, I want folks to come to my website when looking to book a trip with a fly fishing guide. All of these considerations weigh heavy on my descision to change the way I've been updating this site since 2005.

A couple of years ago, another fly fishing guide in Southern Oregon that I know and respect, told me that he noticed how much his postings affected his fishing.  He told me that so many people were coming to his website simply to find out where he was fishing and how successful he had been.  He is VERY successful.  He catche's as many steelhead if not more, than anyone else I know.

I admit I dismissed his concerns as unfounded and thought that his postings to his site hadn't really changed much in the rivers we were both working.  I was wrong.  He was right.  Website postings from guides, blog sites from anglers and shops are bringing tons of folks to our waters.  I used to think that was a good thing.  The more people we get involved in our sport and become passionate about our waters we fish, the better.  I don't adhere to that philosophy anymore. You can love a river to death and I'm concerned that this is what's happening.

Last winter the North Umpqua was busier than I have ever seen it.  It was UNBELIEVABLE!  It was like August in February and March.  Just a few winters ago, it seems we had the river all to ourselves during the winter.  Yes, there were the regulars that have been fishing the river for years.  But the number of anglers pounding the North everyday during the winter season was stunning.

Then the summer season rolled in and the crowds just kept coming.  Of course the North Umpqua has always been busier during the summer season, but not like this.  The trails from the road to the pools are getting destroyed and the shear number of anglers plying the waters is astonishing.  Its counter intuitive and counter productive for a guy trying to operate a business in this very difficult economy to speak of these things, but I can't keep these concerns to myself anymore and I certainly am not going to do anything to contribute to the problem.

I have no problem with the internet.  I don't have a problem with anyone wanting to learn more about the sport I love so much and being able to do it from the comforts of home certainly has its appeal.  I also have no problem with other guides and fly shops or "bloggers" wanting to post information to the internet.  I'm just not going to do it anymore.

My "whats hot" section will be used to let visitors coming to my site know what season/species I'm focused on as the year unfolds.  No more daily or weekly postings about what I'm up to or where I'm working, guiding, fishing and having fun with family and friends.  I'll still post the occasional pic of a client with a nice fish or some nice scenic shot from the gorgeous rivers I get to spend my days on.  Sorry if this offends anyone.  I certainly don't want to take away from anyones enjoyment, but I also don't want to do anything more that will take from my enjoyment or that of my clients, family and friends.

Easy mends,

Dean

We offer you the option of choosing walk-in trips, or a boat trip from either a 16' Clackacraft fly-bench model McKenzie style driftboat or a powerboat trip from a 20' inboard jet-boat.

Expert guide, Dean Finnerty, currently uses many different tried and proven fly rod techniques to get his clients into fish consistently. Dean and our guides will teach you what tactics, fly patterns and techniques that will work the best on any given day for the species you're after.

Dean has been a fly fishing instructor for more than 20 years and has taught fly-casting and presentation to both professional and beginning anglers.

We specialize in catch and release on most of our Steelhead, Trout and Smallmouth Bass trips. We recognize that many people enjoy catching fish for the table, but also understand that if our fishing resources are to last into the future, then now is the time to embrace conservation efforts for all the species we fish for. We recommend that our clients bring video camera's or 35 mm type cameras on their adventures to capture some of the scenes of the day. It is not uncommon for us to see Bald Eagles, Osprey, Seal/Sea Lion, Grey Whales, ducks, geese, deer, elk, bear and numerous other species of wildlife while on most of the rivers and bays that we fish. Dean can also make arrangements to have your trophy mounted by some of the top taxidermists around or have your fish "air shipped" anywhere in the world.

Our Goal at 5 Rivers Guide Service and North Umpqua Fly Fishing Adventures is to give you the best guided fishing trip in the state of Oregon, one that you will cherish the memories of, for years to come.
