What's Hot?

Whirlwind Week!

This past week was incredible.  I spent one incredible day after the next with some of the best clients a guide could ask for catching summer steelhead, trout and smallmouth bass.  We spent our time on the lower Umpqua, the upper Willamette River and the upper McKenzie.  What a week!

Lynn Moon hoists one of the many bass she and her husband Dave caught while fishing with me on the lower Umpqua this past week.

Then on Sunday evening, I spent one of the most enjoyable trips so far this season with father and son team, Gene and Matt Gramzow on the upper Willamette.  Gene is a very experienced spey fisherman and can really cast!  Matt was an awsome single hand fly rod caster but had never really spent much time with the two-hander.  It turned out Matt was a natural!  He took to the spey rod very quickly and was placing 70-80 feet of perfectly straight fly line on the water within minutes of trying it out.  Later in the evening, Gene invited me to follow him down one of my favorite runs and in less than a half dozen casts, I got this gorgeous fish to grab!

Caddis Fly Shop guide extraordinaire, Barrett Christianson helped me out with a four party group on the upper McKenzie for trout this week.  Len, John (seated in Barrett's boat) and Marilynn and Harry who fished with me did a great job and we all had a blast catching native and hatchery rainbow's.

Marilynn is holding one of several decent hatchery fish she caught with me.

The coming weeks have me doing much of the same types of trips.  Our trout fishing will last through the fall.  The smallmouth fishing will remain smoking hot through the end of August.  Summer steelhead will continue to get better and better through the late fall.  I have very few opening left through the end of August.  If you want to participate in any of these fisheries over the next few weeks, give me a call and I'll try to accomodate you.  Otherwise, September and October still have some open days.

Expert guide, Dean Finnerty, currently uses many different tried and proven fly rod techniques to get his clients into fish consistently. Dean and our guides will teach you what tactics, fly patterns and techniques that will work the best on any given day for the species you're after.

Dean has been a fly fishing instructor for more than 20 years and has taught fly-casting and presentation to both professional and beginning anglers.

We specialize in catch and release on most of our Steelhead, Trout and Smallmouth Bass trips. We recognize that many people enjoy catching fish for the table, but also understand that if our fishing resources are to last into the future, then now is the time to embrace conservation efforts for all the species we fish for. We recommend that our clients bring video camera's or 35 mm type cameras on their adventures to capture some of the scenes of the day. It is not uncommon for us to see Bald Eagles, Osprey, Seal/Sea Lion, Grey Whales, ducks, geese, deer, elk, bear and numerous other species of wildlife while on most of the rivers and bays that we fish. Dean can also make arrangements to have your trophy mounted by some of the top taxidermists around or have your fish "air shipped" anywhere in the world.

Our Goal at 5 Rivers Guide Service and North Umpqua Fly Fishing Adventures is to give you the best guided fishing trip in the state of Oregon, one that you will cherish the memories of, for years to come.
